Please note:
Signals 1, 3 and 8 do NOT mean a typhoon will definitely come to Hong Kong.
Numbered Signal System:
The Hong Kong Observatory uses numbers 1, 3, 8, 9 and 10 to signify the strength of the typhoon in the area of Hong Kong.
Meaning of “Hoisted”:
It has been a tradition in Hong Kong that when the Hong Kong Observatory announces a signal, this signal will also be hoisted at the Observatory. Therefore, “Signal No. 3 is hoisted” has the same meaning as “Signal No. 3 is announced” or “Signal No. 3 is issued”.
