Conserve

Conserve has developed a simple yet very effective up-cycling process that converts abundantly and freely available plastic bags into a renewed material called HRP - Handmade Recycled Plastic, which is then used to produce eco-friendly fashion bags and accessories. Founder Anita Ahuja notes: "Plastic bags, due to their non-biodegradable nature, have caused countrywide havoc. We require new solutions for waste management - incineration and landfills are no longer viable options in the era of global warming".

The non-government organisation is creating jobs in the urban slums of Delhi. Today, Conserve supports nearly 100 rag pickers and employs some 50 workers who convert HRP into a wide range of fashion. An average Conserve bag requires about 70-75 polyethylene bags to be used in its fabrication.

Dialog

Based on fair trade networking, Dialog is a Hong Kong accessories brand dedicated to initiating livelihood projects in Asia's disadvantaged communities through creating fashion products that are glamorous, bohemian and fun!

The multi-country operation involves working with charities in Vietnam, Pakistani migrant groups in Hong Kong, and socially-sound Chinese factories that provide equal work opportunities for the disabled. Dialog launched the brand World Butik this year, offering more fashion forward bags and clutches made from hand crafted textiles found throught Asia.

GSG by Flora Creatives

Philippines-based GSG by Flora Creatives produces handmade and specialty papers from thriving indigenous materials that are easily renewable, such as abaca pulp with inclusions of other fibres such as banana, salago, mango and madre de cacao leaves.

Gigi Gonzales, who took over the running of the family business, then harnessed the local craft of weaving abaca fibre into sinamay and other materials to create "paper fabrics". Her weaving translated beautifully into bags and houseware items.

Today, GSG by Flora Creatives is a major supplier of Aveda's eco-friendly toiletry/cosmetic bag kits.

Nattanun Sampong

Nattanun Sampong is the founder of her own company which sells beautiful handmade knits and crocheted collections made by skilled craftsmen of Thailand’s under-developed village communities. "My goal was to develop the villagers' skills while providing a fashion dimension to their work, bringing their product to export quality level," Sampong explained. Her fair trade oriented business has provided the villagers with better lives and enabled them to give their children better education.

Recently, Sampong was selected to be part of the Young Designer Room Project of the Department of Export Promotion of the Ministry of Commerce of the Royal Thai Government and now exports her knitted and crocheted products to the USA, Brazil and Japan.
